What this did for 20-30 farmers.

The land is there. The farmers are there. Everything else is what's been missing.

Hatirjheel's lake edges are some of Dhaka's most neglected spaces. Degraded soil. Waste dumping. Land that has been written off.

Living alongside it: low-income families, many of them first-generation migrants from rural Bangladesh who grew up farming. In the city, that knowledge does not count. No training, no tools, no route to market.

The result is a double waste. Productive land sitting unused. Experienced growers with nowhere to take their skills.

Founders covered all operational costs, so members' contributions went to the project.

Six months. Four things.

  1. 01

    farmers at workshop

    The farmers who came forward

Participants were confirmed from those who had already approached Youth Prochesta for support. Plots were agreed, baselines recorded and the Jheel Krishi Farmer and Youth Stewardship Group formed to run the work.

  2. 02

    farmers assessing tools

Seeds, tool and how to use them

Training in agroecology, composting, safe cultivation, and basic enterprise ran alongside procurement. Every farmer left with what they needed to start.

  3. 03

    farmer on lake edge

    Planting the lake edge

Vegetables, herbs and seedlings went into degraded lake-edge land. Youth took on maintenance, composting and record-keeping. The site started to look like somewhere people were working.

  4. 04

    farmers filling in form

From the ground to the market

Youth Prochesta connected the harvest to local buyers: residents, vendors, restaurants, community networks. Produce was tracked and sales recorded.
